THE ESA POETRY COLLECTION
Are you an aspiring poet? Do you want to share your works with the UBC community? Now’s your chance!
In response to the growing number of aspiring writers here at UBC, the ESA is excited to host our first ever creative conference, The Poetry Collection. We welcome all aspiring poets to participate in this event and gain some experience having their works presented to an audience and also, to have the opportunity to be featured on our website!
The first component of this event is a virtual submission form. Here, we request that poets submit their works using a Word or PDF document in order for their works to be posted to our website, https://www.ubcenglish.com/. You can submit here– submissions are open until November 21!
The second component of this event is in-person! On November 23 2022 from 4:00- 6:00 PM, we will be holding the in-person component to our conference in Irking K. Barber’s (IKB) Peña Room. Here, guests are invited to RSVP here. There is no need for poets to complete this RSVP form but unfortunately, we will only have the time and space to accommodate a maximum of 25 poets. So, we will have to operate on a first-come, first-serve basis. We also ask that no one reads for longer than 5 minutes. There will be drinks provided. For accessibility information, please check out IKB’s access guide.
Please feel free to reach to us through email (english.ubc@gmail.com) or Instagram (@ubc_esa) with any questions. We look forward to seeing you all soon!
FAQ:
- Do you need to have your poem posted to the website to participate in the in-person component of the Poetry Collection?
Nope! We understand that some of the poets have had their works published in journals and are under contracts to not have their works posted elsewhere. So, as long as reading your poems out loud does not break any contracts you may be in, you are allowed to participate in the in-person component only. Also, even if your poem is not posted in any other journals or website, you still can choose to only participate in the in-person event. You are not obliged to have your work shared on our website!
- Can I bring a plus-one?
Guests (anyone who is not presenting a poem) are allowed, however, they will also have to fill out the RSVP form.
- Why is there a time limit for the poems?
To maximize how many poets can present, we have decided to limit the length of time allocated to each author. Unfortunately, the space we are using has a firm attendance capacity and we want to provide an opportunity for as many individuals as possible!
- Can I submit more than one work?
Yes! You can submit multiple poems, however, we ask each poet to submit no more than six pages of poetry!
